Onward: The Search for the Phoenix Gem is a Winner for Behling

Middle-grade girls will love this book based on the Pixar movie “Onward.”

The story centers around Sadalia Brushthorn, an elf in the village of New Mushroomton. Sadalia is determined to become a real reporter and a well-respected editor.

When magic hits the town with some force, Sadalia begins her quest to find the answers. How did the red fog envelop the school? Where did the dragon come from that appeared in the town? How are the Lightfoot brothers and their mother involved?

Sadalia’s quest takes her from the police station to a dangerous trip across a bottomless ravine and up a mountain. What she learns along the way will provide her with everything she needs to write a winning article. But, it will also teach your child about persistence, love, friendship, and leadership.

I loved the interactions of the brothers. The Lightfoot boys would have made their father so proud if he’d lived long enough to see them grow up and follow their hearts.

Onward: The Search for the Phoenix Gem is a perfect story for young readers. It’s a combination of fantasy, magic, and a reality every child can relate to. Sadalia is not an ideal child. She will break a few rules along the way, but her passion for truth is something we can all envy.

About the Book

A magical all-new story based on Disney and Pixar’s film, Onward!

Sadalia Brushthorn is an ordinary teenage elf.

She goes to school, hangs out with her friends, and dreams of becoming a journalist. But the problem is, nothing exciting ever seems to happen in her town of New Mushroomton.

Sadalia wonders if she’ll ever get the chance to write a true investigative story.

Then one day, something mysterious, monumental, and shockingly magical erupts at her high school, sending everything into chaos. And the whole event centers on two elf brothers, Ian and Barley Lightfoot.

Sadalia thinks this is her chance to write a meaningful story. But there are so many questions:

  • What caused this event?
  • How are Ian and Barley involved?
  • And why were they searching for a magical object known as the Phoenix Gem?

It’s up to Sadalia to set out on her “in-questigation,” to follow the Lightfoot brothers’ epic quest and discover the truth about the events that transformed her town and her entire world.
