When Danny Iny offered me an ARC copy of his newest book, Leveraged Learning, in exchange for an honest review I jumped at the opportunity. It wasn’t until my second child was born that I realized how children learn differently. Education isn’t something you can expect to be a “one-size fits all” solution. Now that I have grandchildren I realized it was time to revisit the opportunities available both young and old today.
I was an “A” student growing up; Sadly, I could be found studying until two in the morning before an exam while other students breezed through the material. In all honesty, I needed to read the text five to seven times before I retained it. Being unable to absorb the lesson on the first pass doesn’t mean I was stupid (like I thought at the time.) It indicated I learned differently from my peers.
By contrast, my first son could be shown something and be able to do it by himself immediately. My second son needed to learn himself while doing it. Showing him didn’t accomplish anything. That’s why I was so intrigued by Danny Iny’s book.
When a catastrophic fire destroyed our family business, my tuition instantly disappeared. I dropped out of college near the end of my sophomore year and got a job.
It didn’t take many years of struggle before I realized I needed to tackle the coursework for the business degree I originally intended to get. But again, the tuition was beyond my abilities.
Creative Learning
Like Iny, I became creative in my desire for learning. I began taking only those business courses required for the degree I would never achieve. You know what? It worked, and that’s why you need to read this book. I became successful in my field and eventually taught learning sessions where businessmen and women with a Master’s Degree learned from my experience.
The expertise I needed to identify the fraud artists I encountered in my journey came from the wisdom of my peers, not from any college classes. I went on to write a research reference guide for people in my profession. This was at a time when only one college in the U.S. had a degree program in my field. This is the innovation Iny is talking about.
Learning is no longer linked to a college degree. Learning is a combination of the wins and losses you experience on the job, the books you read, the vast array of free educational opportunities available through the internet, and the mentors you encounter along the way. Passing the Torch in Education Practices
The lessons about creativity in learning from Iny are a mirror of the path I took with my sons. My oldest used a Post-Secondary Program in Minnesota to attend college his junior and senior year of high school. The state paid the tuition and the credits counted for both high school and college graduation. Imagine! Two years of a four-year degree paid for by the state.
This innovation in education provided a tuition-free opportunity, unlike anything I’d seen before.
My son was forced to meet social and academic challenges far beyond anything he was prepared for. That alone forced him to engage in critical thinking and problem-solving techniques in order to survive. It prepared him for his future business career in a way the normal coursework never could.
Most importantly, my son developed the fortitude necessary to compete in today’s business climate.
Consequently, this proves that our young people are capable of deeper learning experiences and creative solutions to the age-old issue of money driving our current opportunities in education.
