Flinch-Free Fiction:

Saturday’s Pick: Author Melanie Snitker

Melanie Snitker
Welcome Melanie Snitker
It’s Saturday again, and time to introduce you to another Indie author: Melanie Snitker
I will be featuring some of the best fiction from Indie Authors on Saturdays and today’s pick is author Melanie Snitker. My goal is to provide safe recommendations for those ages 12+ who want to read books containing minimal bad language and no sexually explicit scenes. There may be some scenes that include warfare and death, but none will contain offensive gore or graphic violence. These authors are all members of Clean Indie Reads under the leadership of one of my favorite authors: Lia London.
Melanie Snitker is the author of the Love’s Compass series. She has enjoyed writing for as long as she can remember. Her writing career started out  by writing episodes of cartoon shows that she wanted to see as a child, and her love of writing grew from there. She and her husband live in Texas with their two children who keep their lives full of adventure, and two dogs who add a dash of mischief to the family dynamics. In her spare time, Melanie enjoys photography, reading, crochet, baking, archery, camping, and hanging out with family and friends.
Welcome, Melanie!
Hi, Peggy! Thank you so much for allowing me to be a guest on your blog. It’s a pleasure to be here!

Tell us a little about the books you write.

I write Christian romance novels. I love to create a story that, no matter what challenges the characters face, the love of God shines through. My first book, Calming the Storm, is a ‘standalone’ and has the strongest Christian theme. I have four books in my Love’s Compass series so far (with more on the horizon), and I focus on family in that series. My latest release, Safe in His Arms, is the first of a new series, and I’m putting an emphasis on second chances and the grace God extends to His children.

So all of your books are flinch-free? What made you decide to write clean books?

I started reading romance books when I was a teenager. I found books by Janette Oke at our local library but struggled to find many other Christian romance books.

In college, I would occasionally borrow a romance that I thought was clean only to find it was filled with sex and language. It was very discouraging.

I started writing stories as a kid. I wanted to publish my own work someday and I grew up sure that I would write and publish science fiction. But after seeing how difficult it was to find clean romance novels, I started writing my own. That’s how Calming the Storm was born.

That’s interesting that you started out wanting to write science fiction. Is there any chance you might publish something from that genre in the future?

It’s very possible! I wrote the first book in a science fiction trilogy in college, and it’s still sitting on my computer, waiting for aggressive editing. Lol I’d like to finish and publish that trilogy at some point. I also want to write a clean dystopian romance series at some point.

You mentioned Janette Oke. What other authors have influenced you as a writer?

There are a lot of them! Let’s see… Lori Wick, Rachel Hauck, and Bodie Thoene, for sure. C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, J.K. Rowling, and more than I could mention. There are some authors I’ve met through Clean Indie Reads that I admire and learn a great deal from as well.

Melanie Snitker, how did you find Clean Indie Reads?

In January of 2014, I decided to put real effort into my writing and publish my first book. I didn’t know much about publishing independently at the time, and I had a hard time finding much in the way of resources online until I joined Clean Indie Reads (CIR).

I’ve met so many wonderful people through CIR. The encouragement I’ve found there is second to nothing. The group is also instrumental in connecting with new friends that I hope I’ll get to meet in person some day.

CIR also gave me the courage to pursue publishing independently. I’m so glad I went that route and that I have a lot of support from my family and my fellow authors.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing the fifth book in my Love’s Compass series. I’m in the beginning stages of working on the first draft, so I’m still getting to know the characters. I often start a book with a good idea of what I’d like to see happen. But the characters have minds of their own, and I’m always surprised by something along the way. That’s one of my favorite parts about writing. I’ve learned to go with the flow. LOL
